Some residents of Ore in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday barricaded the Benin-Ore expressway over a shortfall in the supply of new naira.
BOblog reports that the protesters made bonfire on both sides of the expressway to register their anger on the scarcity of new notes.
This obstructed human and vehicular movement and resulted to heavy gridlock on the axis.
In separate interviews, the protesters frowned at their inability to access cash, which is already threatening their livelihood.
One of the protesters, Angela Alonge lamented that she was unable to withdraw cash from her banks’ Automated Teller Machines (ATM’s) and was also disallowed from gaining access into the banking hall.
Another protester, Femi Martins wondered why the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) initiated such policy without considering the plight of Nigerians in cities and communities.
He said the essence of the protest was to register their grievances on the hardship caused by the Federal Government irrespective of the lingering fuel crisis.
Miss Janet Akinbode frowned that the policy is hectic as Point of Sales (PoS) operators no longer give nor sell cash.
She wondered why President Muhammadu Buhari would order the reintroduction of old N200 notes when its a smaller denomination.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ondo State Command, ASP Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the protest.
She said that the police are at alert to avert any breakdown of law and order.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Unit Commander in Ore, Mr Sikiru Alonge lamented the difficulty in controlling the traffic, just as he pleaded with motorists to use alternative routes.
