One of the scenes of Saturday suicide bombing in Gwoza

The death toll in Borno State suicide bombing has hit 32, as against 18 persons that reportedly died on Saturday.

News Rider reports that four suicide bombers had on Saturday, June 29, 2024, detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Gwoza town of the state.

It was gathered that at about 3p.m on June 29, a female suicide bomber invaded a wedding ceremony of a popular young man in Gwoza town with two children and detonated IEDs, killing herself and others.

Some minutes later, a second suicide bomber targeted General Hospital Gwoza and detonated another improvised explosive device. The third attack occurred close to a shopping mall in Mararaban Gwoza.

However, the fourth bomber disguised as a mourner and bombed a funeral service for victims of the first attack. At the four separate attacks, about 29 persons were killed while over 100 others sustained varying degrees of injury.

The dead comprised children, adult males, females and pregnant women. Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Dr. Barkindo Saidu confirmed the four separate attacks.

Though Saidu pegged the number of dead persons as 18, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet but there are fears that such coordinated attacks are the handiwork of Boko Haram, also known as Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS).

But the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who visited the injured victims on Monday, confirmed that the  number of fatalities has reached 32.

He stated that 42 persons were rushed to the specialist hospital but 14 have been discharged after receiving treatment. He noted that 26 are still receiving treatment.

The Vice President made a personal donation to all the victims, just as her condoled with the families of those killed by the multiple explosions.

He also conveyed the condolences of President Bola Tinubu to Gwoza people and Borno state.

Shettima was accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Kadafur; Senator Ali Ndume; Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari; former Nigerian Ambassador to China, Baba Ahmed Jidda; and other government officials.

The Saturday bombing occurred three years after twin suicide attacks by female jihadists killed at least three and injured 13 worshippers in a mosque on the outskirts of Gwoza.
