President Bola Tinubu has directed intervention Ministries and Agencies to occupy Maiduguri in order to mitigate the impact of flooding on human health and the environment.

The Registrar of Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), Sanitarian Yakubu Baba disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while informing the media on the council's plans to address the aftermath of flooding in Borno State.

News Rider reports that the flooding, which many described as most devastating since the creation of the state in 1976, was linked to the overflow and collapse of Alau Dam on early Tuesday morning, September 10, 2024.

In addition to the collapsed dam, the heavy downpour witnessed across the states, also led to severe flooding in Biu, Chibok, Konduga, Bama, Dikwa and Jere Local Government Areas, just as it washed away dead bodies from the cemetery.

Already, EHCON has procured Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs), water treatment materials, among others that were handed over to Environment Health Officers (EHOs) deployed to Maiduguri to restore sanity in the environment.

Baba stated that the directive is in line with the eight point agenda of President Tinubu on sustainable environment.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako commiserated with governments and residents in the affected States over the devastating flooding that ravaged communities, leading to loss of lives, property and livelihoods.

He described the 2024 incident as the worst flooding in 30 years, which rendered millions of persons homeless and without clean water, food, health care, and education.

The Borno flood also ravaged other major locations in the city, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, Lagos Area, Monday Market and cemetery.

Also, the state secretariat, post office, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and Maiduguri Zoo popularly called Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo were some of the critical infrastructure submerged by the flood on Tuesday.

Some of the inmates allegedly drowned while over 300 escaped when a prison wall located along the Custom area was destroyed by the flood.

As at September 18, 2024, 300 persons have been confirmed dead, 80, 000 houses damaged while over 1,000, 000 have been displaced by flooding in 176 Local Government Areas across 29 states.
