UAE Donates Relief Materials To Nigeria's Flood Victims

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
United Arab Emirates has donated 50 tons of humanitarian aid for victims devastated by flood in different parts of Nigeria.

The relief materials were delivered to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and handed over to NEMA by the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Salem Alshamsi.

In her X handle @TheZubaidaUmar on Tuesday, the Director-General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar stated that she received the donation on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

She lauded the UAE Embassy in Nigeria for their gesture and commitment in assisting victims of disasters in Nigeria.

Umar noted that the aid would be promptly distributed to flood victims in order to assist in alleviating the sufferings of the impacted communities.
The DG assured that the relief materials would be immediately distributed to Borno and other States affected by the flood, once cleared.

"I want to assure Nigerians that once we take custody of these items, they will be shared accordingly with those affected by the flood. That is an assurance.

"This will not only stop in Maiduguri. Recently, parts of Enugu State were also flooded. So, we are going to target all areas, even Kaduna was slightly flooded few days ago.

"So, we are going to target the whole country. I am sure that is what the government of UAE also wants us to do," she added.

Alshamsi hinted that the donation was in line with UAE’s gesture to support countries affected by natural disasters.
He disclosed that the items were donated at the directive of the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed Al Nahyan, to reduce the impact of hardship caused by the floods.

"This urgent humanitarian aid of 50 tonnes of basic supplies has been provided to our friendly people of Nigeria, to support areas affected by the recent floods.

"The UAE, as usual, is always helping nations affected by natural disasters. So we are happy to be here," Alshamsi said.

News Rider reports that between April to September 2024, 29 states and 172 Local Government Areas were ruined by flooding that affected 1,048,312 persons, displaced 625,239, and resulted in the death of 259 persons.
