The House of Representatives has endorsed the establishment of Nigeria Surrogacy Regulatory Commission for the monitoring and supervision of surrogacy arrangements in Nigeria.
This followed the approval of a bill seeking to establish the commission on Thursday in Abuja, sponsored by member representing Ogbomoso North, South and Orire Federal Constituency, Ayodeji Alao-Akala.
When passed into law, the bill is expected to capture the registration, regulation, and monitoring of surrogacy agencies in Nigeria and related matters.
Leading the debate on the general principles of the proposed legislation, Alao-Akala disclosed that the bill seeks to regulate and evaluate surrogacy in Nigeria to ensure that medical and health laws are not violated.
He informed that it will also protect those seeking to overcome infertility.
The lawmaker lamented the presence of black makerters, who exploit expectant parents within the system, adding that surrogate mothers and the children to be born also require legal protection.
Speaker, Hon Tajudeen Abbas however, referred the motion to the House Committee on Healthcare Services for further legislative action.
