Eid-el-Kabir: FG Declares Tuesday, Wednesday As Public Holidays
BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
In commemoration of this year's Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the federal government has declared Tuesday and Wednesday as work-free day across the country.
Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who disclosed this last week, felicitated with Muslims both in Nigeria and abroad on the occasion.
This was contained in a statement made available to the media and signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore.
Aregbesola enjoined the Muslims to imbibe the spirit of love, peace, kindness and sacrifice, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad and to use the period to pray for peace, unity, prosperity and the stability of the country, considering the current security challenges.
He said the security challenges range from banditry in the Northwest and North-central, insurgency in the Northeast; kidnapping, armed robbery, ethnic agitation and sundry criminals in other parts of the country.
According to him, "The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is committed to the security of lives and property of Nigerians, empowering them for successful living through the social investment programmes as well as providing adequate security in the schools, especially with the spate of innocent school children being targets of kidnapping".
While wishing Muslims happy Eid-el Kabir celebration, he advised Nigerians to report suspicious individuals and criminal activities to law enforcement agencies, especially during the festival.
The minister reminded Nigerians on the need to observe all the COVID-19 protocols particularly the non-pharmaceutical measures like wearing face masks, hand washing and social distancing, meant to keep the transmission of the disease at bay.
“We must all take responsibility for containment of the pandemic during this year’s festival” he added.
He sympathised with the families of school children, who had been kidnapped or suffered one misfortune or another, just as he prayed that Allah would comfort them.
