How Ogoniland Clean-up, Climate Change Redefined Environment Sector
BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
The immediate past Minister of Environment, Dr. Muhammad Mahmood Abubakar has disclosed that the clean-up of Ogoniland, climate change issues and new policies were the major successes that redefined the environment sector.

He stated this in Abuja recently while handing over the affairs of the ministry to the Minister of State for Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on 1st September sacked the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Sabo Nanono and redeployed Dr Abubakar as the substantive minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Abubakar thanked Chief Ikeazor for her support, cooperation and resilience, which resulted in the numerous achievements recorded in the ministry during his two-year tenure as the minister.

While stating that environment and agriculture shared same similarities, he assured that the two ministries would join forces to boost the fortunes of the environment sector.

According to him, "We have achieved so much in the last two years in terms of programmes, projects and policies that have changed the narration of the sector positively; I can say that it was worthwhile".

“I enjoyed working here (ministry) greatly with everyone. I wish I can continue working here with you, but duty calls," he added.

Receiving the hand over document, Chief Ikeazor vowed to protect the affairs of the ministry, just as she sought the support of the staff in the ministry.

She said, "We serve the same government and at the pleasure of Mr. President. Just as the outgoing minister said that duty calls him to another ministry, so duty calls me to stay here, and take charge of the affairs of the ministry of environment until Mr President calls me elsewhere".

Ikeazor assured Dr Abubakar that the good working relationship enjoyed during his tenure would continue.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan wished Dr Abubakar success in his new assignment and pledged his loyalty to the Minister of state.
