NRC Suspends Services As Explosion Rocks Abuja-Kaduna Rail Track

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja

Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended its operations on the Abuja-Kaduna train station today, following the explosion that detonated on the rail track around Rijana and Dutse.

The incident, which took place between Wednesday night and Thursday morning was allegedly caused by terrorists, just as the passengers were said to be traumatised.

A viral video circulating online shows how a section of the track was damaged by explosives.

The managing director of NRC, Engr Fidet Okhiria had explained that the explosives damaged the rail tracks somewhere between Dutse and Rijana.

He said, “Yes, there was an explosive on our rail track somewhere around Rijana and Dutse last night, and this damaged the tracks".

“Efforts are currently ongoing to ensure that the train services along the Kaduna-Abuja route are fully restored",

However, a statement made available via NRC website on Thursday revealed that operations have been suspended till further notice.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, train services have been immediately suspended for the safety of our dear passengers".

“Efforts are in place to restore service. Further information would follow immediately service is restored,” the statement said.

A former Senator that represented Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani had posted on his verified Twitter handle that bandits attacked a train on the route on Wednesday.

Sani said “Yesterday (Wednesday) terrorists attacked the Kaduna-Abuja railway with an explosive and opened fire on the train, targeting the engine driver and the tank".

“This (Thursday) morning, I was onboard when our train ran over another explosive damaged rail.”

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
