How Abuja Okada Riders Set Houses Ablaze Over Colleagues’ Death

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja

Scene of the incident at Lokogoma yesterday.

The Same Global Estate, Abuja known for its scenery was bustling like other residential homes.

Located in Lokogoma district, Abuja Municipal Area Councii (AMAC), the estate is peaceful, though some of the houses are old.

The residents were however thrown into panic on Sunday when over 100 motorcyclists invaded the estate in search of a hit-and-run driver that killed two of their colleagues.

A motorist reportedly hit two Okada riders on Sunday and ran into the estate to avoid being lynched by a mob.

Irked by the motorist move to evade arrest, the Okada riders drove into the estate in droves and set two buildings ablaze.

This, they did to avenge the death of their colleagues that were killed by the motorist.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, informed BOb that the motorcyclists set the houses ablaze in an attempt to capture the hit-and-run driver.

It was learnt that the incident would have escalated to full-blown crisis but for the quick intervention of security operatives that prevented further damages on the properties.

Reacting, the Estate Manager, Mr. Adebisi Adelowo said that over 100 motorcyclists, who were mostly Hausa's attacked the estate and set fire on two buildings.

“They pulled down our gate and started stoning people’s houses. We couldn’t stop them until the police and the army intervened."

He added, “We later learnt that they attacked our estate because two of their colleagues were knocked to death by a motorist, who ran to our estate for safety as he was been chased with big stones and other dangerous weapons."

Adelowo said though the motorist was not a resident but he ran into the estate for safety, having noticed a police post at the entrance.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
