Determined to mitigate ecological challenges across the country, the federal government has stated that the completed erosion and flood-control works at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Omoku in Rivers State would provide succor in the institution, as well as safeguard lives and properties in the commhnity.
Acting Permanent Secretary of Ecological Project Office (EPO), Dr Famous Eseduwo stated this in Rivers State during the commissioning and handing-over ceremony of the project to the Institution over the weekend.
He said that the risk of flooding and its consequences in the institution necessitated the prompt intervention by the federal government, pleading with the institution to protect the project against invaders.
Eseduwo stated that the commissioning and handing-over ceremony was to enable the institution and community take ownership of the project and sustain it to avoid wasting federal government's investment.
He lauded the project's Consultant, Messrs Steron International Resources Limited, the Contractor, Messrs Westfield Global Construction limited as well as EPO engineers for their commitments that led to the timely completion of the project.
In his address, Senator Mpigi Barinada, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, commended the federal government for responding to the yearnings of the institution through the project.
He described Buhari-led administration as tesponsible and responsive, adding that the project demonstrated Mr President’s commitment to addressing problems confronting institutions of higher learning across the country.
According to him, " I feel honoured as a Special Guest of Honour not only because the project is within my State, but also it's in keeping faith with the present administration’s promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographical location or political consideration”.
Barinada stated that the project ended perennial flooding in the Institution, just as he thanked Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and the residents for their cooperation and facilitating a rancour-free environment during the execution of the project.
Responding, Provost of the College, Dr Emmanuel Ikenyiri appreciated the federal government and EPO for the intervention, adding that the college had witnessed perennial flooding that disrupted academic, administrative and social activities in its campuses.
He pleaded with EPO to award contract for Phase II of the project that would include the construction of a lake in campus two of the college.
In a related development, Dr Eseduwo, who was accompanied by the Director, Drought, Desertification and Coastal Management of EPO, Haruna Bello also inspected the proposed site for erosion and flood-control works at Angalabiri-Torukubu road in Bayelsa State.
