NISS Unveils Mobile App To Bolster Agriculture

Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) has unveiled a mobile application, NISS Agro App meant to support farmers and extension agents to bolster agriculture. 

The app, which can be downloaded from various online application stores would provide knowledge, information and services to farmers on specialised implements and fertilisers for bigger yields. 

At the end of a one-day training in Kano recently, farmers and extension agents were drawn from the North-Western states to acquaint them on the benefits of the app. 

Addressing the participants, NISS Northwest Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Sama’ila Noma stated that the institute developed the app to guarantee best and standard practices in farming.

Represented by a Professor of Soil Science, Nafiu Abdu, the don described the ICT agriculture tool as user-friendly, adding that it would assist farmers to properly utilise the soil and boost agricultural production.

He said, "NISS is an organisation entrusted with the mandate of ensuring that the fertility of the soil is maintained for efficient and sustainable crop production."

According to him, “NISS in its bid to make food available to Nigerians is always organising training for farmers and extension agents on how they will properly manage soils and also boost production.

“This app is for data collection on soil-related issues. We collect a lot of data on soil fertility, soil conservation and farm produce, as well as how they market it,” he added.

He encouraged the farmers and extension agents to utilise the skills acquired from the training, saying that they should replicate the lessons learnt during the training in their respective states. 

On her part, a resource person, Aisha Buba stated that the app is a work in progress, as it has the capacity to boost farm yield and agricmarket of the farmers.

She said that the app would provide an avenue for the farmers to interact with a registered soil scientist for any form of assistance on farming activities, while also providing them with ease of selling their produce. 

Also speaking, the Director of Extension, Kano State, KNARDA-AADP, Gambo Isah Garko described the app as a welcome development, as it would facilitate the day-to-day activities of the farmers and extension agents.

He was hopeful that more trainings would be organised for the beneficiaries to improve their capacity to meet the agricultural needs of Nigerians.

Emerging Diseases: EHCON Faults Health Workers For Neglecting PPEs
