BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
The Ecological Project Office (EPO), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has advocated the enactment of National Policy on Flooding, Erosion, Earthquakes and Earth Tremors, meant to address Nigeria's numerous environmental disasters.

This formed part of the deliberations when the management of EPO hosted staff of the Geological Unit of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja yesterday.

Acting Permanent Secretary of EPO, Dr Famous Eseduwo stated that EPO, being a special intervention office is deprived of budgetary allocation but intervenes in ecological issues with the federal government's one percent share of ecological fund.

He said that EPO alongside four other related agencies such as NEMA, National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), North East Development Commission and, Nigeria Agriculture and Land Development Agency (NALDA) utilises the federal government's one percent share.

Eseduwo pleaded with NEMA to assist in enlightening Nigerians on EPO's mandate, stating that there is no sludge fund in the office as often misconstrued by the public.

He assured that EPO would join forces with stakeholders that are willing to resolve the ecological and environmental issues in the country.

Also speaking, the Director of Pollution Control, EPO, Mr Clinton Igwe stated that the federal ministry of environment charged with policy formulation is well-positioned to coordinate all relevant agencies in producing the national policy.

He was optimistic that the national policy would fastrack NEMA's current push for an endearing solution to Nigeria's environmental challenges.

On his part, Deputy Director, Research and Forecasting, NEMA, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu Usur said the essence of the visit was to strengthen the existing ties and identify areas of partnership with EPO.

Usur commended EPO for the numerous interventions in checkmating erosion and flood across the country.

The technical officer of NEMA's Geological unit, Mr Awwal Sadiq sought for a united front with relevant agencies in order to tackle the myriad of environmental and ecological challenges in Nigeria.
