FG Pledges Fair Spread Of Ecological Projects In Geopolitical Zones

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
The federal government has pledged to spread ecological intervention projects fairly to benefiting communities across the six geo-political zones to avoid bickering, encouraging synergy with states and local governments in the utilisation of its ecological funds.

Permanent Secretary of Ecological Project Office (EPO), Mallam Shehu Ibrahim stated this in Abuja when he received a delegation from Veritas University led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Hyacinth Ichoku over the weekend.

He assured that the request for ecological intervention was already captured in EPO's databank, adding that appropriate action would be taken based on merit.

Ibrahim commended Prof Ichoku and his team for engaging in solid Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within Bwari community by providing a transformer, borehole, police post and kitting the vigilante group to beef up security in the locality.

On his part, Prof Ichoku appealed for urgent intervention to salvage the university and Bwari community from erosion, which he said its currently threatening the university complex and the community generally.

He stated that the university had earlier carried out minor remedial works at the erosion site, but the site deepens everyday.

Responding, the Director of Pollution Control, EPO, Mr Clinton Igwe explained that the office lacked sufficient resources to address all the requests from the states, just as he advised Nigerians to channel their requests to states' government for intervention.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
