About seven persons were rescued as fire gutted the headquarters of the West African Examination (WAEC) office in Lagos State on Wednesday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) attributed the incident to a power surge.
According to the agency, “Upon arrival at the aforementioned location, a section of the WAEC headquarters multi-storey building was found to be on fire."
“Further investigations revealed that the fire started on the 3rd floor of the 12-storey building due to a power surge."
“A total of seven female staff of the corporation were trapped on the 5th and 7th floors and were safely evacuated due to the swift response of the rescue team on the ground. The fire has also been put off and dampening down concluded.”
It further stated that a post-disaster assessment and staff headcount were ongoing to ascertain the level of damages.
“The combined efforts of the agency’s team alongside the agency’s paramedics, LASG FIRE, FED FIRE, UNILAG FIRE, LASAMBUS, and LASTMA are on ground to ensure a swift recovery,” the agency said.
It added that recovery operation was ongoing as at the time of the incident.
Responding to the development, WAEC stated that no lives were lost and that the entire vital documents were intact.
A statement by WAEC’s Head, Public Affairs Department, Moyosola Adesina revealed that, “The Management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), wishes to inform the general public that there was an early morning fire incident at the WAEC National Office, Yaba, Lagos."
“It was swiftly contained by a combined team of firefighters. Thankfully, there was no loss of life and all important documents and records are intact", it concluded.
