Gunmen Abduct Enugu Catholic Priest

Gunmen have attacked St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Eburummiri community, Ibagwa-Aka in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State and abducted the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Victor Ishiwu.

The incident happened on Saturday night during the priest’s weekend all-night adoration with worshippers. The gunmen suspected to be kidnappers stormed the church and shot sporadically into the air.

Findings revealed that the gunshots dispersed the worshippers, who ran in different directions for safety.

An eye witness confided in the Nation that while the priest ran into the parish house and locked himself up, that the parishioners ran out of the church with some of them running into the bush that night.

The source further stated that the kidnappers conversed in Pidgin English and Fulfulde before trailing the priest to the Parish House.

They threatened to set the church ablaze if the cleric failed to come out from his hiding.

The eyewitness confirmed that when Fr. Ishiwu refused to yield to their request, that the gunmen forcefully penetrated into the Parish House through the church chapel, after breaking it.

The source said that they gained access into priest's hiding spot, kidnapped and whisked him to an unknown destination.

"Since that time, we have not heard anything about the priest. Nobody has told us anything on whether the abductors have established contact with anybody”, the eyewitness added.

The spokesman of Enugu Police Command  Daniel Ndukwe, was not reachable as at the time of filing this report.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
