Army Demands Credible Information To Rescue Abducted Female Officer

The Nigerian Army has called on the public to provide credible and reliable information that could lead to the safe rescue of the newly-commissioned female officer, Lt. PP Johnson.

Johnson was allegedly abducted by the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, in Enugu on December 26, 2022 while visiting her grandmother in Aku-Okigwe, Imo State.

That was shortly after the completion of her cadet training and subsequent commissioning as a lieutenant into the Nigerian Army.

A video footage of her abduction had emerged in the social media where the kidnappers claimed that their action was in line with the fight for Biafra against the Nigerian state.

Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, stated on Friday in Abuja that efforts are still on-going to rescue the female officer.

He noted that the officer’s circumstance as a woman and a Nigerian citizen of South-eastern extraction did not dissuade her abductors from dehumanising her in their mindless attempt to commit atrocities under the guise of fighting for Biafra.

Nwachukwu noted that the incident is another pointer to the myriad of crimes being unleashed by IPOB/Eastern Security Network, ESN, on Ndigbo, the very people they claim to be fighting for their emancipation.

The Army spokesperson said that those who are still in doubt of the true status of these groups should know that IPOB and ESN are terrorists.

He noted that the groups are masquerading as freedom fighters and do not deserve the support of anyone particularly the Southeasterns.

Nwachukwu described the information making the rounds that Lt. Johnson had been released or rescued from her abductors as unsubstantiated, adding that the officer is yet to be released or rescued.

Nwachukwu stressed that the video footage being circulated and associated with the rescue claim was an old video of the arrest of a suspect by troops.

“Much as we appreciate the concern and goodwill of the general public for her safe rescue, we also wish to note that the information on the rescue of the officer did not emanate from the Nigerian Army", he added.

He noted that the Nigerian Army would leave no stone unturned in its effort to rescue the officer and bring the perpetrators to book.

IPOB Denies Abducting Female Officer
But the IPOB on Friday denied abducting the female officer.

The media and publicity secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful accused the Nigerian Army of building up lies against innocent IPOB members.

“IPOB is not responsible for the abduction of this Army woman and IPOB is not unknown gunmen and can never be", he said.

Powerful advised the Nigerian Army to arrest those responsible for the heinous crime against the woman.
