The Labour Party has favoured the former Political Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mr. Akin Osuntokun as the new Director General of its Presidential Campaign.

Announcing the appointment in Abuja, on Tuesday, the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure said that the decision was reached after wide consultations with party stakeholders across board.

Osuntokun replaced former DG of the Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, who announced his resignation on Tuesday 20th December, 2022  following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja over his involvement in money laundering.

The Court had on Monday, 19th December, 2022 convicted and sentenced Okupe to a two-year imprisonment for receiving N240 million in cash from the office of the former National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu however, gave an option of N500, 000 in each of the 26 counts, amounting to N13 million, which must be paid before 4:30pm on 19th December or Okupe would be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre.

BOblog had reported that Okupe succeeded in paying his fine before the deadline and was set free.

He, thereafter tendered his resignation, which was addressed to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

But Abure described Osuntokun, who was a former managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria as a worthy and trustworthy replacement for Okupe.

Osuntokun became the South-West leader of the party after he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the LP in August 2022.
