NDLEA Seizes Christmas Drugs At Lagos Airport, Seaport

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has intercepted consignments containing Colorado that were hidden in vehicles imported from Montreal, Canada and cannabis juice flown in from South Africa. 

The consignments were seized at the Tincan seaport, Apapa and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, both in Lagos State.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi said on Sunday in Abuja that the drugs were meant for distribution ahead of the Christmas season.

He said that the 185 parcels of cannabis Indica, popularly called Colorado weighing 61.3kgs were seized during a joint examination of a container at the Tincan seaport.

Babafemi hinted that the container marked MSCU5206726 from Montreal, Canada was declared as containing three units of used vehicles.

He emphasised that upon a 100 percent examination, it was found to contain two vehicles; a 2009 Toyota Corolla car and a 2009 Ford Econoline bus, as well as used car engines, bicycles, shoes and other items including the drugs.

The spokesperson noted that two dock workers Abdulquadri Abdulazeez and Ogbuji Kenneth have been  arrested by NDLEA in connection with the seizure following their initial arrest by the Port Security and the Police.

Babafemi said that NDLEA searched a consolidated cargo from South Africa and discovered smuggled bottled Cannabis juice weighing 16.50kgs on December. 21.

This, he said was uncovered at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc, SAHCO, import shed at the Lagos airport.

He noted that investigations by anti-narcotics officers subsequently led to the arrest of four freight agents Soremekun Olalekan Wasiu; Olufisayo Dayo; Moruf Olusegun Bashir and Imole Moses Ajayi.

The spokesperson revealed that the suspects statements eventually led to the arrest of the consignee, a wine shop business owner, Emebede Chuka on December 22.

NDLEA also uncovered cannabis and ecstasy pills fondly called MDMA concealed in Bournvita containers  enroute Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 

He noted that the exhibits were discovered at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc, NAHCO, export shed on December. 23, adding that a vulcaniser, Iyanda Ogunleye Yaya, who was paid N4000 to deliver the consignment has been arrested.

Babafemi hinted that two suspects Nura Zakariya’u and Alkasim Abubakar were arrested along Zaria-Kano road, Kwanar Dangora, in Kano state, with 161 blocks of cannabis.

He said that the drugs, which weighed 152kgs contained  various quantities of Exol and Codeine based syrup.

Babafemi noted that a total of 100,000 pills of tramadol were also recovered from a suspect, Amaechi Johnson in Imo state on his way to Onitsha, Anambra state.

He hinted that a total of 708 kg of cannabis were uncovered by operatives from a bus at Ehinogbe, Owo area of Ondo state on December 20.

Emerging Diseases: EHCON Faults Health Workers For Neglecting PPEs
