The United States government has disclosed plans to strengthen the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, with forensic, prosecution and intelligence gathering tools.
This is coming on the heels of N500 million grant received by the agency from the Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative, BUA Group, to fund selected projects.
Spokesman of NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi said on Monday in Abuja that the forensic support was from the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
He recalled that NDLEA Chairman, Rtd Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa had during meetings with top US officials in Abuja and Washington DC requested their assistance on intelligence gathering.
The US project, which would be implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Nigeria, would boost NDLEA’s efforts to conduct intelligence-led investigations.
Babafemi said through the project, that the US would provide legal books and an e-library for prosecution and other legal needs of the agency.
This, he believed would empower the agency to prosecute cases with reliable evidence using improved collection, handling, and custodial procedures.
He appreciated the strong working relationship with the US, hoping that the project would advance its shared goal of a united, peaceful, and stable Nigeria.
