At least, five persons died as gunmen suspected to be political thugs assassinated the Senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Enugu East, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu.

The incident occurred along Amechi Awkunanaw Road in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State on Wednesday night.

The source, who preferred anonymity, said that Chukwu was assassinated with his driver while on his way home after the campaign in parts of Nkanu West LGA.

He revealed that the bus which the candidate used for his campaign was also set ablaze as persons inside it were  burnt beyond recognition.

The source said: “They have assassinated Oyibo Chukwu! He was killed inside his campaign vehicle, a Sienna bus.

“We finished campaign in parts of Nkanu West and the assailants trailed him as he was heading home, attacked and killed him.”

Hoodlums also attacked one of the campaign vehicles belonging to the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ofor Chukwuegbo, on the same route.

The driver of the vehicle was reportedly burnt to death.

Spokesperson of Enugu Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the attack.

He said that the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani has launched manhunt for the criminals.

The statement reads: "Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, fdc, has ordered the intensification of the discreet investigations and manhunt of the subversive criminal elements, suspected to be IPOB/ESN renegades, who in the night hours of 22/02/2023 at different locations, ambushed and simultaneously attacked and murdered People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) members, and also attempted to attack the convoy of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate,".

Ammani stated this after visiting the scenes of the incidents the same night at Topland by Ebony Paint Road and Eke-Otu both in Amechi-Awkunanaw, Enugu.

While condemning the barbaric acts, the commissioner commiserated with the parties and family members of the deceased.

He vowed to fish out the perpetrators and ensure that they faced the full wrath of the law.
Ammani reaffirmed the commitment of the police and other security agencies to emplace adequate security for peaceful and credible elections in the state,

He urged the citizens not to succumb to the cowardly antics of the hoodlums, which is aimed at creating fear and to disrupt the electoral process.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
