NBC Issues Foreign Broadcasters 30-day Ultimatum To Register

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to foreign broadcasters with offices in Nigeria and beam their signals into the country to register with the commission .

This is even as the commission encouraged Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and other broadcast stations streaming online, to also register in order to avoid disconnection and prosecution.

Director-General of NBC, Malam Balarabe Ilelah disclosed this at the presentation of letters to the 67 newly approved licensees on Friday in Abuja.

He noted that NBC is determined to join forces with security agencies to clamp down on illegal broadcasters in the country.

Ilelah reminded licensees that are yet to pay their outstanding debts, to hurriedly do so or risk their licences revoked for illegal broadcasting.

He informed that the refusal to pay for licenses amount to economic sabotage, adding that the commission would be left with no option than partner with security and anti-corruption agencies to redeem the debts.

The DG pleaded with the newly licensees to reciprocate the gesture of President Muhammadu Buhari by using the license within the approved timeframe.

Ilelah urged them to act responsibly in accordance with the Act, Code and other extant laws guiding broadcasting, enjoining them to promote Nigeria's democratic values, national unity and cultural heritage.

He advised the new licensees to pay attention to safeguarding the peaceful coexistence of the country through their broadcast.

Ilelah begged them to achieve 100 per cent local content.and enhance diversity in programmes for Nigeria’s widest audience.

”Broadcasters should note that part of the requirements for the commencement of test transmission is to send their staff for training at the newly established Nigeria Broadcast Institute,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the licensees, the Chief Executive Officer of Afe Elamah Company Limited Edo, Dr Mustafa Lecky promised that they would promote the unity of the country.

”We pledge to abide by the rules and regulations. We will not fail. This is a very sacred trust that we hold very dearly. We will pay our annual fees on time and the commission will be happy with us," he said.
