NigeriaDecides 2023: INEC Cancels FCT Senatorial Results For Over-voting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has canceled the results of Abaji Area Council senatorial election due to over-voting.

Collation and Returning Officer for Abaji, Prof. Sanni Saka, from University of Abuja, disclosed on Monday in Abuja that the results were canceled as party agents raised concerns over excessive voting.

Saka had announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored  9542 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had 9547 votes.

The Labour Party got 1789 votes while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) had 43 votes.

The total number of registered voters stood at 66, 201, accredited voters 21, 473 while the total valid votes was pegged at 21,112.

Also, the total number of rejected votes were 530, even as the total votes cast stood at 21, 373.

Saka noted that INEC would decide when to hold another election in Abaji.

APC Party agent, Mr Suleiman Ango, said that he requested for the cancellation of the results given some discrepancies in the number.

“We were here yesterday and while announcing the results, they assigned a figure to a political party that did not participate in the election. By implication, it looked suspicious and may certainly lead to litigation.

“Today (Monday) after giving them 12 hours, they came with another controversy in terms of the numbers allocated to different political parties. So, we could not reconcile the number of registered voters, total votes cast, invalid and rejected votes .

“The result is contradictory and we are aware of the Electoral Act. In view of that, it can’t be accepted," he added.

Ango noted that the result was suspicious and INEC needed to do the needful.

Another party Agent, Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also challenged the result, citing unaligning numbers as the major reason for the refusal.

Mohammed harped on the need to edit the results and ensure that it met the criteria for free, fair and credible elections.
