The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the collation of governorship election results in Abia and Enugu States.
National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Festus Okoye, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja
He noted that INEC held talks on Monday and reviewed the conduct of the March 18 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
Okoye revealed that following deliberations at the meeting; the commission decided to suspend collation of the governorship results in some parts of Abia and Enugu States.
He recalled that INEC office in Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) was invaded by thugs on Sunday, March 19, 2023 and officials were held hostage in relation to the collation of results from the LGA.
The commissioner hinted that based on reports from Enugu state, there is a need to review the results for the governorship election from the two outstanding local government areas of Nsukka and Nkanu East.
“Consequently, the commission hereby suspends the collation of results in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State and the two outstanding local government areas of Enugu State which are yet to be collated.
“A review will be undertaken immediately before the process is concluded,” Okoye added.
He pleaded with the voters, parties and candidates in the affected states to be patient with INEC.
