Niger Delta Group Extols Military Intervention On Black Soot

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja

A Niger-Delta Environmental Health Advocacy group, Women for Sustainability (WfS) has extolled the military for the giant strides recorded in the region especially its intervention on the black soot.

This was even as the group expressed optimism that the soot,  which appeared in the region following the heightened activities of crude oil thieves would soon fizzle out.

Convener of the group, Ms. Ibieye Batubo, said on Wednesday that though the soot was not completely eradicated, but their intervention brought relief to the region especially among Portharcourt residents.

Batubo attributed the gradual disappearance of the soot to the ongoing military onslaught against illegal bunkerers, determined to sabotage the economy of the Niger Delta region.

While commending the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen LEO Irabor for playing a crucial role towards the eradication of the soot, she enjoined the troops to shun criminals that are bent on spreading diseases in the region through illegal bunkering.

The convener advocated the need for environmentally sound Niger Delta that would be devoid of pollution that breeds diseases.

She said: "We appeal to Gen Irabor and his troops not to give in to the antics of the crude oil thieves, who are not ready to give up on crime.

"For the very first time, we have a CDS that had visited the region on several occasions because of the economic sabotage."

The group enjoined the residents to cooperate with the troops in finding a lasting solution to the problem, adding that lack of collaboration would worsen the environmental crisis in the region

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
