The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed that over 40,000 people die annually on Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) in Nigeria.
Corps Marshal of FRSC, Dauda Biu, stated this on Monday in Abuja, in commemoration of the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
He said that the figure was obtained from the statistics of road traffic crashes and injuries, which he described as the leading cause of death and disability.
Biu informed that 1.3 million people were killed and 50 million persons injured each year globally.
The corps marshal hinted that there is no greater threat to persons aged between 5 to 29 years than road traffic crashes, as one in every four deaths occured among pedestrians and cyclists.
He disclosed that the United Nations had developed global plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-2030), which reflected an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries.
The FRSC boss said that road traffic deaths and injuries are expected to increase by 50 per cent in 2030, harping on the need for safe roads, vehicles and behaviours.
He called on government at all levels and partners to rethink mobility by providing access to safe and affordable mobility systems for all.
The Focal Person/Country representative, UN decade of Action for Road Safety, Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, assured that the government would continue to priortise issues of road safety.
