In a bid to protect the environment from harmful practices, the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has sought the support of the media in enforcing public health laws.
Registrar/CEO of EHCON, Dr. Yakubu Baba stated this on Friday when he led the management and staff of the council on a courtsey visit to Media Trust headquarters in Abuja.
He noted that the council is ready to implement environmental health laws and create awareness on climate change, a task that would not be achieved without the support of the media.
Baba stated that EHCON has over 50, 000 environmental health personnels that would enforce the laws and safeguard the environment down to rural communities.
The registrar said that with the establishment of Environmental Health Reference Laboratory centre, the council is ready to respond to outbreak of diseases and has achieved the task of migrating from analogue to digital method of environmental supervision.
He hinted that with the aid of technology, one personnel could monitor about eight thousand population adequately, expressing optimism that the council is capable of ridding off constant outbreak of cholera in Nigeria.
Baba harped on the need to enlighten rural dwellers to build safe toilet facilities.
The registrar informed that digitilising the profession is part of the rebranding agenda of the council, which mandated all the practitioners to concentrate on their area of specialty.
He maintained that only the practitioners that participated in the modular examination would be permitted to renew the 2024/2025 licence and choose their core area of specialty.
The Group Executive Director of Business Development, Media Trust Limited, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim Shekarau, thanked EHCON for seeking partnership with his organisation.
He disclosed that Media Trust is interested in a partnership that would develop all sectors of Nigeria's economy and promised to provide wider coverage to all the activities of EHCON.
