Subsidy Removal: Gombe Doles Out Palliatives To 30, 000 Beneficiaries

The Gombe State Government has commenced the distribution of palliatives to 30, 000 beneficiaries in order to lessen the impact of petrol subsidy removal.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya stated this on Tuesday while flagging off the distribution of items in Dadin Kowa community in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of the state.

He noted that the items were part of the first phase of the distribution of palliatives, adding that over 420, 000 persons would likely benefit from the palliatives across the state.

Yahaya pointed out that the first phase would capture 30, 000 beneficiaries, saying that each of the beneficiaries would receive one bag of 5kg rice, one carton of Spaghetti, two bags of fertilisers and two litres of pesticides.

The governor noted that inclusion of agricultural inputs is strategic, considering that 80 per cent of Gombe citizens are engaged in agriculture.

He said that the support would facilitate bountiful harvest, improve livelihoods and promote food security especially in the upcoming dry season.

Yahaya hinted that the move is essential in order to guarantee longterm economic stability and development of the country.

“As we face these economic challenges, we are with you; government is fully aware of the situation that individuals and households are going through across the state.

“Today, we are taking a concrete step in order to show responsibility and ensure that no one is left behind during this trying time,”he said.

Yahaya enjoined the committee in charge of the distribution to be dedicated and carry out their duty with the fear of God.

The Executive Secretary of Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Haruna Abdullahi commended the governor for the gesture and assured that the palliatives would reach the targeted persons.

Abdullahi, who is also the chairman of the committee in charge of the palliatives, encouraged the beneficiaries to judiciously use the items and not sell the agriculture inputs.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
