Gov Fubara Gives Reasons For Demolishing Rivers House Of Assembly

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has explained the morale behind the demolition of the State House of Assembly on Wednesday. 

This, he linked to structural defects arising from explosion and fire outbreak, which rendered the building unfit for human use.  

Recall that at least, 10 bulldozers arrived at the complex on Wednesday morning, December 13, 2023, and started demolishing the burnt chamber and the conference hall, where the legislators uses for their sitting. 

Security agencies at the scene reportedly cordoned off the area and prevented people from taking pictures of the demolished complex.

Sources noted that the demolition of the complex further deepened the crisis between the House of Assembly and Fubara, which started with an impeachment threat on the governor.

The governor was said to have ordered the demolition to allow for the renovation of the complex.

But the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Joseph Johnson said on Wednesday in Port Harcourt that there were visible cracks on the walls and the entire structure looked frail and unsafe for legislative business.

The House of Assembly was attacked in October, 2023, after an attempt by some lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor. 

This singular plan divided the house into two factions, thereby creating tension in the state.
Johnson said that the government sought for professional advice on the integrity of the building, after Gov Fubara’s inspection visit to determine the level of damage.

“After the assessment of the integrity of the complex, experts warned the government that the continuous use of the building in its present state will be disastrous.

‘’The government had tried all cost saving measures towards the repair of the complex until it bowed to superior view of rebuilding the complex to a more befitting edifice.

‘’In the interim, the Rivers Government has provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct its affairs pending the rebuilding of the complex,’’ he added.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health
