Senate Swears-in Lalong As Plateau South Senator

    Senator Simon Lalong

The former Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong has been officially sworn in as the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the 10th Assembly.

This followed the sack of Senator Napoleon Binkap Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the Court of Appeal.

Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took the oath of office on Wednesday, which was administered by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr Chinedu Akubueze.

Shortly after the oath of office, Lalong promised the people of Plateau that he would not disappoint them, saying that he decided to resign his appointment as the Minister of Labour and Employment for the Senate as his first choice.

Recall that Lalong had on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu, to enable him occupy his seat at the Senate. He also submitted his Certificate of Return and relevant documents to the Clerk of the Senate.

In the letter, the former minister reminded President Tinubu that after exhaustive legal processes, the Court of Appeal declared him as the duly elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and directed the INEC to issue him the Certificate of Return.

Lalong said that the decision for his resignation was difficult given the trust and confidence that President Tinubu placed in him as a Minister in his cabinet, having served as the Director- General of the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Council, which delivered victory for the APC.

Legal Battle
The former minister had filed a petition challenging the declaration of Sen Bali as winner of the Senatorial poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the petition, he asked the tribunal to nullify Bali’s election on the grounds that the PDP did not have a proper party structure and could not produce candidates for the elections.

But in a unanimous judgment read by Justice Muhammad Tukur, the court admitted that the PDP, having no structure, lacked the right to have taken part in the election.
