Abuja Forest: Police Rescue Five Abducted Victims

Police have rescued five abducted victims unhurt at a forest located in Kuje and Karmo, in Kuje Area Council and Abuja Municipal Area Council respectively.

Named Kuje forest, the area is an isolated forest where kidnapped victims are kept, though largely occupied by Fulani herdsmen and few Kuje natives.

News Rider reports that aside kidnapping, illegal tree logging occurs in the thick forest daily and unhindered despite the grave implications of climate change on Nigeria’s soil.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josphine Adeh said on Monday in Abuja that the rescued woman among them was kidnapped on January 27, 2023.

She said: "At about 11:30 pm when a distress call was received by the Iddo Police Division and on hearing sounds of gunshot around Sabon Lugbe axis, the police patrol team were drafted to the scene where one Blessing Eze, a woman was met with bullet wounds on her shoulder inside a Toyota Corolla car with RSH 724 KC, black in colour.

Adeh disclosed that Blessing told the police that, she and her husband, one Joshua Eze, were returning home when some kidnappers in an unknown vehicle double-crossed them, fired guns at their vehicle and abducted her husband to an unknown destination.

The spokesperson explained that in response to the distress call, the Inspector–General of Police (IGP) Special Intervention Squad (SIS), police anti-kidnapping Unit of the command and other tactical sections swung into action and rescued the victim unhurt at Kuje Forest on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at about 6:20 pm.

She added: “In a related development, on 28/01/2024 at about 05:30 am, one Peter Ede in the company of one Thankgod Ogunyi, all males of Piwoyi, Airport road  reported at Karmo Division that, on the same date at about 01:50 am, while praying at Idu Gbagyi mountain Karmo, some criminal elements numbering about seven armed with guns and cutlasses attacked them and abducted three of their members to unknown destination.

“On receipt of the report, police operatives from Karmo Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Abaya Haruna swiftly mobilised to the scene and combed the surrounding bushes and hills between Karmo to Gwagwa.

“They engaged the hoodlums in a serious gun duel and the three victims namely; one Igbodi Emeka ‘M’, Precious Uche ‘F’, and Eric Chukwudi ‘M’, were rescued unhurt. I wish to inform the general public that several heinous crimes have been prevented by the police Command without people knowing.

“The FCT Police Command is always committed and willing to work with you (residents of the FCT) to defeat crime and criminality in all its forms in the Federal Capital Territory.

“What we need most is your understanding and cooperation. Our emergency numbers are out on public domains for prompt reporting of any suspicious activities.”

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
