Anambra Boat Mishap: Eight Die, 38 Rescued

At least eight persons died and 38 others were rescued during a boat mishap in Anambra State

The 50-passenger boat capsized over the weekend when the wooden engine rammed into a snag on the water channel.

Sources revealed that the boat was travelling from Idah in Kogi State to Onitsha before it capsized at Umumu Anam in Anambra.

The General Manager of Corporate Affairs, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Alhaji Jibril Darda’u confirmed the incident.

He informed newsmen on Sunday in Lokoja that the sad and unfortunate incident occured at Umumu Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area between Thursday (January 4) and Friday January 5).

Darda’u commiserated with the families and friends of the deceased and prayed to God to grant rest to their souls.

He disclosed that preliminary reports indicated that the wooden engine boat rammed into a snag on the water channel and capsized with at least 50 passengers on board.

“From the records, eight persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while 38 others were rescued immediately.

“The sad incident involved a passenger boat travelling from Idah in Kogi to Onitsha in Anambra.

“Upon the receipt of the sad report, relevant personnel from the Marine Department were deployed for rescue, recovery and proper investigation," he added.

Darda’u hinted that recovery efforts are ongoing, adding that the authority would provide detailed information to the public as soon as the field officers report back to the headquarters.

He assured the public of NIWA’s commitment and determination to ensure safer inland waterways for the movement of people and goods.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines. It is used for personal vehicles, generators, and industrial equipment.
