International Press Centre (IPC) Lagos has concluded arrangement to parley over 100 stakeholders on rebuilding electoral confidence ahead of the Edo and Ondo States off-cycle elections this year.
The multi-stakeholders dialogue on: "Rebuilding Trust in the Electoral Processes, Institutions and Elections", will also provide an opportunity for the electoral umpire to unveil their preparatory activities towards the 2027 general elections.
Following the success of the inaugural session in Abuja, this subsequent edition aims to further stimulate meaningful discussions on how to reinforce commitments and approaches to multi-stakeholder collaboration for enhancing confidence in the electoral processes.
The International Press Centre (IPC) is a non-governmental organisation committed to promoting media freedom, democracy, and transparency in Nigeria.
Scheduled for Monday, March 25, 2024, the forum will garner submissions and recommendations on how diverse stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), media, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), law enforcement agencies, political party leaders, youth, women and the public can effectively fulfill their roles and collaborate to enhance the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria.
This initiative, which is implemented under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase 2 (EUSDGN II) project, is targeted at strengthening democratic governance, accountability and electoral processes in Nigeria through various interventions and partnerships.
Prof. Isaac Albert of the University of Ibadan will present the lead paper, expected to be chaired by a former INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Okey Ibeanu.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi are expected to present remarks, while a renowned broadcaster, Mr. Ambrose Somide of Raypower FM will moderate the event.
Reacting, the Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade emphasised the importance of transparent elections in bolstering citizens' trust particularly in developing democracies like Nigeria.
He highlighted the correlation between encountering obstacles during elections and reduced confidence in elected officials, often leading to participation in activities opposing the ruling regime.
Arogundade reiterated its commitment towards implementing proposals and contributions aimed at enhancing public trust in Nigeria's electoral system.
