Reps To Investigate N200bn Spent On Suspended Census

The House of Representatives has concluded plans to investigate N200 billion spent on the suspended 2023 Population and Housing Census.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Clement Akanni (PDP-Osun) during plenary on Thursday in Abuja.

Akanni noted that the immediate past administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari, planned to conduct another census in 2022 but the programme was later postponed to 2023.

He disclosed that the former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Mr Clem Agba informed that a total of N869 billion would be required for the exercise.

Akanni quoted the former minister as saying that the figure included post-census activities, noting that the National Population Commission (NPC) claimed that it spent about N200 billion to prepare for the 2023 population and housing census.

He hinted that Buhari suspended the exercise indefinitely, a few days to the end of his tenure.

Akanni said that it is imperative to provide Nigeria with accurate and reliable demographic data for policy formulation and planning for sustainable development.

While adopting the motion, the House compelled the Committee on Population to invite the Director-General of NPC, Mr Ojogun Tellson Osifo to explain how the N200 billion meant for the suspended 2023 population and housing census was spent.

The house enjoined the committee to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines. It is used for personal vehicles, generators, and industrial equipment.
