A popular Lagos-based cross dresser, Idris Okuneye (alias Bobrisky) has bagged six-month imprisonment for abuse of the naira.
Okuneye was sentenced to jail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State on Friday, April 12, 2024, without an option of fine.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro pronounced the sentencing to Bobrisky, who has been in detention since his arrest.
Awogboro stated that the judgment will serve as a deterrent to others that are in the habit of abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.
The judge ruled that the jail-term will commence from March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.
In The Beginning
News Rider reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on April 4, filed a six-count charge against Bobrisky. The charge bordered on naira mutilation and money laundering.
The prosecution witness and Assistant Suprintendant of EFCC, Mr Bolaji Temitope had on April 5 narrated the circumstances surrounding the prosecution of Bobrisky.
He was convicted on April 5, following his guilty plea but the court reserved sentencing until April 9.
Due to the Federal Government's declaration of public holidays on April 9 to 11 for Eid-el-Fitr celebration, the case could not proceed as scheduled.
According to the charge sheet, Bobrisky sprayed the sum of N400,000 at imax Circle Mall in Jakande, Lekki on March 24, 2024.
The EFCC also held that between July and August 2023, Bobrisky tampered with the sum of N50, 000 while dancing during a social event at Aja Junction, lkorodu.
Also in December 2023, Bobrisky sprayed about N20,000 at White Steve Event Hall, Ikeja, while dancing during a social event.
The court also held that the dress-crosser tampered with the sum of N20, 000 by spraying while dancing during a social event in 2022 at Event Hall, Oniru, Victory Island.
To this end, the court claimed that Bobrisky’s conduct was an offence contrary to and punishable under section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
Though two of the charges were later dropped, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to naira abuse and requested for leniency as a first-time offender.
