President Tinubu Appoints New Head Of Climate Change Council, Others

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the new Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). 

Until her appointment, Maduekwe had served as Nigeria National Coordinator on Climate Parliament and also a  legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.

Climate Parliament is an international and multi-partisan network of legislators working worldwide to help solve the climate crisis and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. 

The appointment was in accordance with the President's determination to actualise Nigeria's green industrial vision, boost investor confidence, and unlock sustainable economic value through various climate finance instruments.  

Maduekwe (39) is expected to serve in interim capacity, pending the confirmation of her appointment by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

She holds a Bachelor of Law degree; a Master’s degree in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Hull (UK). 

The new DG will serve as the co-chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

Maduekwe has over 15 years of national and international experience in climate policy development and project implementation.

The President also appointed Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng (40) as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement, Office of the President. 

Before his appointment, he led multiple financial institutions, and was Head of Business Development for Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company PLC (NMRC). 

Shelleng is seconded to the NCCC Secretariat, where he will handle all matters related to climate finance and stakeholder/donor relations.

Aside this, he is expected to assume the position of Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP) and  member of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, as well as the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

Shelleng holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Also, Mr Olamide Fagbuji (44) was appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations, Office of the President.

He had served as Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters during the previous administration, and was recently the Technical Adviser to the Director-General of NCCC on Policy Research and Strategy.

Fagbuji, a policy analyst and computer scientist, is seconded to the NCCC Secretariat. 
He will oversee the digitalisation of a new open procurement process and cross-departmental procedural optimisation initiative.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale said on Sunday in Abuja that all the appointments take immediate effect.

The President expects the new appointees to bring their expertise and discipline to bear in the important assignments in pursuance of the nation’s aspiration on green industrial development and climate action that would gurantee sustainable growth and national prosperity.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines.
