Tinubu Inaugurates Climate Action Committee July, Expands Green Economy Membership

President Bola Tinubu has concluded plans to inaugurate the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions in July.

This was even as the President approved the terms of reference for the pioneering Office of Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action (SPEC) and expanded Green Economy membership. 

News Rider reports that the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action shall be the lead negotiator on climate-related matters on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, reporting directly to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Also, the office is expected to serve as the lead negotiator on carbon market and management initiatives on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with a mandate to integrate the work of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP) into the climate action plans of the Federal Government and report directly to the President.

"It will be the supervisory interface between the Secretariat of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) and the NCCC Supervisory Council, which is chaired by the President.

"SPEC shall coordinate all climate action-related activities across Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) legislative, and subnational entities which directly impact the President's climate action and green economic agenda. This is with a mandate to directly engage other nations, international organisations, and non-governmental entities to build coalitions and advance global climate goals in accordance with Nigeria's national interest.

"The office shall be the focal point of the Federal Government of Nigeria's engagement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings, and other related international meetings on climate-related and green economic matters.

"Coordinate the activities of all relevant Federal MDAs towards the successful fulfilment of Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

"The office will act as the secretary of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, which is chaired by the President.

"It will be the chief diplomat and lead representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on all climate-related engagements and negotiations while supervising the Energy Transition Office.

Also, the focal-point authority on all non-executive activities related to the operations of the NCCC, with delegated authority to oversee the activities and operations of the NCCC secretariat for frequent reporting to the President in between meetings of the NCCC Supervisory Council.

"The office shall act as the lead interface on engagements with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Power, Federal Ministry of Environment and other critical Federal Government of Nigeria institutions concerning the administration and coordination of climate-related donor finance, renewable energy finance and green industrial growth management."

The office will produce the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.
Tinubu also approved the expansion of the membership of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions (P-CAGE).

The additional members added to the already existing committee are representatives from Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning; Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas). 

Also, representatives from Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology; NNPCL and Energy Transition Office, Mr. Somkele Awa-Kalu.

The Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, Ms. Yasmin Mohammed was also added as a member of P-CAGE.

Tinubu emphasised diligence, dedication, and patriotism in the execution of the critical national assignment, with a view to realising his administration’s agenda on climate action and green industrial growth for the long-term benefit of Nigerians and Africans generally. 

These were contained in a statement by the Director of Information & Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) Segun Imohiosen on Sunday in Abuja.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines.
