Biden Withdraws From US Presidential Race

The incumbent President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race barely five months to the election.

This implied that Biden, a Democrat who is seeking a reelection for the second term in office, ended the race on Sunday by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the US number job.

Biden's decision followed weeks of pressure from Democrats after a rather shameful performance during the June 27 debate with Republican candidate, Donald Trump.

In a withdrawal letter circulating on X, the 81-year-old Biden noted that it has been the greatest honour of his life to serve as the President of US.

The US election is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, November 5  2024.

He added: "While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
Biden, who is recovering from the COVID-19 attack assured that he would speak to the nation later in the week and reveal more details about his decision to stand down.

While drumming support for Harris, he said: "Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year."

Harris was elected as the 49th Vice president of the US in 2021 alongside Biden. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in US history, as well as the first African-American and first Asian-American vice president.

Reacting, Harris thanked Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to the country.

"On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country.

"I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.

"I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. If you’re with me, add a donation right now, "she added.
