Farmers/Herders Crisis: Tinubu Creates Ministry of Livestock Development

  President Bola Tinubu

In a bid to resolve the prolonged farmers and herders clashes across the country, President Bola Tinubu has created the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

Tinubu stated this on Tuesday at the State House while inaugurating the Renewed Hope livestock Reform Implementation Committee.

News Rider reports that the President is yet to assign any Minister to head the new ministry.

Present at the Inauguration were the Vice President,  Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Chief of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, among other cabinet members.

Recall that President Tinubu had on September 15,  2023, approved the establishment of the Presidential Committee mandated to reform the livestock industry and provide long-term solutions to end the frequent clashes between herders and farmers in the country.

The setting up of the committee was sequel to the submission of a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.

It was convened by the former Executive Governor of Kano State and Chairman of All Progressives’ Congress (APC) Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje.

At the conference, Ganduje disclosed that during his tenure as the Governor of Kano State, he hosted the national conference as part of a deliberate effort to promote the modernisation of livestock production, while strengthening the capacity of local authorities to manage relationships and amicably resolve conflicts between herders and farmers.

But unconfirmed sources disclosed that the President may likely pick a minister from one of the key Northern States to pilot the affairs of the new ministry.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
