Federal Government and Labour Unions have endorsed N70, 000 offered as the new minimum wage by President Bola Tinubu.
The agreement was reached during a meeting with the leadership of Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday in Abuja.
News Rider reports that the Thursday meeting was the the second time that the organised labour and others members of the negotiating team met in seven days.
Announcing the deal via his official X handle, @aonanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said: "President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.
“President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.
“President Tinubu announced the decision at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days.
“The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for the fatherly gesture as the President also promised to use his discretionary powers to meet the demands of university unions demanding unpaid 4 months salaries.”
Reacting, President of NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero hinted that labour unions accepted the new minimum wage due to other incentives attached to the offer.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, he noted that another reason for accepting the offer was because the President promised a review every three years as against what was obtained in the past.
