The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has pledged to partner with members of Environmental Media Correspondents Association of Nigeria (EMCAN) for wider coverage of biosafety and biotechnology issues in Nigeria.
Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NBMA, Dr. Agnes Asagbra stated this on Friday when she received members of EMCAN, on a courtesy visit to the agency's headquarters in Abuja.
News Rider reports that NBMA is an agency under the Federal Ministry of Environment committed to regulating modern biotechnology and its products to avoid causing harm to human health and the environment.
The agency is the focal point in addressing potential adverse impacts of modern biotechnology such as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and emerging technologies.
Asagbra noted that the visit marked the beginning of greater collaboration and interaction with EMCAN, just as she expressed worry over the language and style of reporting by different media houses.
She was optimistic that the partnership with EMCAN would continue, assuring that NBMA would hold the association in a very high esteem.
Earlier, the Chairman of EMCAN, Chuks Oyema, congratulated Dr Asagbra on her appointment as the director-general of NBMA, praying for her successful tenure in office.
EMCAN comprises print, electronics and online journalists accredited by various media houses to provide coverage on environmental-based issues.
He pleaded with NBMA to collaborate with EMCAN for wider coverage of biosafety and environmental issues across the States.
Oyema was optimistic that NBMA would key into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda to guarantee safe and sound Genetically Modified (GM) food for Nigerians.
