NIA DG, Ahmed Abubakar Explains Rationale For Resignation

Ahmed  Abubakar

The Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Ahmed Abubakar has explained the rationale behind his unexpected resignation.

National Intelligence Agency is saddled with the responsibilities of overseeing foreign intelligence and counter-intelligence operations.

News Rider reports that Abubakar had on Saturday presented his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Addressing State House Correspondents shortly after his meeting with Tinubu, the former NIA boss cited personal and family issues as his reasons for exiting the exalted office.

He stated that he resigned after visiting the President for a routine briefing at the Villa.

"There are quite a number of reasons one will do that. Some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue.

"I discussed with Mr. President, he understood very well, and I promised to remain steadfast with issues and the security situations of the country," he said.

He thanked the President for allowing him to serve under the Renewed Hope Agenda for an extended period of 15 months.

“After the briefing, I tendered my resignation and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted the resignation.

“I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for an extended period of 15 months, which is very rare,” Abubakar said.

Briefly
Abubakar was first appointed DG of the NIA in January 10, 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who extended his stay in office in December 2021.

Born on February 11, 1953, in Katsina State, he is a descendant of Muhammad Maude, a warrior that established Unguwar Maude in Katsina.

In 1984, Abubakar graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in French from the Bayero University Kano (BUK). He served his mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the same institution.

Upon completion, he was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of English and European Languages, where he rose to the position of Assistant Lecturer in 1987.

But in 1993, Abubakar joined the security department of the Nigerian Foreign Service. He was however appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President (SSAP) on International Relations and Foreign Affairs in November 2015.

He speaks English and Arabic fluently.

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
