400 Participants To Attend Regional Forum On Agroecology, Organic Farming

At least, 400 participants from networks of farmers' organisations, public institutions, civil society organisations, researchers, policymakers, and private sector have concluded arrangement to attend this year's Regional Forum on Agroecology (AE) and Organic Farming.

The forum, which is organised by the West Africa Agroecology Alliance (3AO) and the West Africa Organic Network (WAfrONet), in partnership with ECOWAS and ActionAid Nigeria, is expected to reflect on financial policies and mechanisms towards strengthening food sovereignty in West Africa through sustainable food systems.

Scheduled to take place in Abuja from October 21-24, 2024, the theme of this year's forum is: "Financing the Transformation of Sustainable Food and Nutrition Systems for Food Sovereignty in West Africa through Organic Farming and Agroecology: What Policies, Mechanisms and Instruments?"

The event will feature six keynote presentations, eight panels, 11 thematic working groups and a dialogue session with decision-makers from regional institutions such as ECOWAS, UEMOA, CILSS and CORAF.

Currently, West Africa is faced with four major challenges such as structural food and nutrition insecurity, and effects of climate change through extreme weather and climate events like droughts, floods, heat waves, among others. 

Also, the rising sea levels, salinization and physico-chemical degradation of agricultural land, and growing insecurity that weakens production systems, which will be addressed holistically during the forum. 

The overall objective of the forum is to promote sustainable food systems, with a view to strengthening food sovereignty in West Africa through the adoption of policies and sustainable public interventions based on the best practices of –AE, OF and CSA–known as Climate Smart Agriculture.

It will also provide a multi-stakeholder platform for an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and challenges of AE and OF funding for food sovereignty in West Africa.

In addition, the forum will offer an opportunity for AE and OF stakeholders to renew their commitment to work alongside ECOWAS and regional institutions, public bodies, and local authorities to support the scaling up of AE, OF and CSA best practices. 

The forum will benefit from technical and financial support of partners such as ECOWAS, the European Union, AFD, the Adaptation Fund (AF), BOAD, the Green Climate Fund and Action-Aid.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines.
