FEMD Confirms Seven Persons Died In Lugbe Building Collapse

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has confirmed that seven persons died in the tragic building collapse at Sabon Lugbe along the Airport Road.

This was even as FEMD dismissed speculations that 40 persons were trapped in the rubble when the building collapsed on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

News Rider had reported that a building still under construction, sited in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), collapsed about 5 pm on Saturday, while the victims were still inside the building.

But a statement by FEMD Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa on Tuesday revealed that the collapsed structure was located at Gidash Estate and was marked for demolition by the Department of Development Control, Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC).

The statement reads: "FEMD wishes to clarify that the said structure located at Gidash Estate was one of the buildings earmarked for removal by the Department of Development Control.

"What happened is that the structure was marked for removal by development control. So, these boys taking advantage of the fact that there would be no demolition exercise at the weekend, moved in to strip the iron rods in the pillar holding up the building leading to the unfortunate incident.

"Engr Abdulrahman also stated that the Chairman of Miyetti Allah, FCT chapter, Mohammed Hussein confirmed to FEMD that five members of the association were removed dead from the rubble.

"Seven other persons were rescued alive from the rubble of the collapsed building."

EFCC: You Do Not Change A Winning Team

By Iliyasu Gashinbaki          Iliyasu Gashinbaki I have read the letter from the former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, addressed to the Chairmen of the Constitution Review Committee of both chambers of the National Assembly- Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.  I was looking for his prayers to the esteemed lawmakers on clear and unambiguous anomalies he observed in the Establishment Act of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that need legislative action in the review exercise. I must confess, I could not find any.  Instead, the legal luminary made a sweeping statement that is neither rooted in facts nor verifiable evidence that “I very strongly believe the EFCC is unconstitutionally established. The powers under which it was established go beyond the powers of the National Assembly. The EFCC is an unlawful organisation.” How? I have asked myself repeatedl...
