IDGC: NAWOJ Tasks Govs, Wives To Boost Girl-child Education

The National Vice President, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Zone D, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche has tasked governors of the Northcentral States and their wives, as well as the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike to make deliberate efforts toward boosting girl-child education and safety in schools.

Ogbeche made this known in her message to commemorate  the International Day of the Girl Child 2024 on Friday in Abuja, with the theme: "Girls' Vision for the Future."

She noted that the United Nations General Assembly had on December 19, 2011, adopted resolution 66/170 declaring October 11 annually as the International Day of the Girl-child to address the challenges faced by girls across the world,  promote girls' empowerment and fulfil their human rights.

Ogbeche decried that 'Education Opportunities for Girls' in Nigeria as published by UNICEF in June 2022, indicated that poor retention in school is a major challenge while 11 per cent of learners, who are mostly girls, drop out of school at each grade level.

"7.6 million girls are out-of-school in Nigeria–3.9 million at the primary and 3.7 million at the junior secondary level. More than 50 percent of girls are not attending school at the basic education level. In each cohort, one million girls drop out between the first and last year of primary school, and 0.6 million between primary six and JSS one," she said.

According to UNICEF, gender parity in net attendance ratio is below 1:0 in 10 states, primarily in the North, but recommended that supporting girls through increased secondary education and skills development is necessary to delay early marriage, child-birth, improve health and empowerment, and drive economic growth.

Ogbeche urged the governors and their wives, and the minister of FCT to revise the disproportionate gender parity  in their states by investing in the girl-child and supporting their vision for a better future.

She harped on the need for investing in proven solutions for accelerating progress towards a future in which every girl fulfils her potentials. 

On safety in schools, she requested for the strengthening of inter-security network in states to checkmate cross border crimes.

Ogbeche enjoined various first ladies in the northcentral states to be in the vanguard of girls' rights and reproductive health, among other issues that affect the girl-child.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines.
