IWMF Mourns Ukrainian Journalist, Victoria Roshchyna

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) has extended its condolences to the family of Ukrainian journalist, Victoria Roshchyna.

Roshchyna, a 2022 Courage in Journalism Award recipient died while imprisoned in Russia.

A statement by IWMF's Deputy Executive Director, Nadine Hoffma on Friday in Abuja, revealed that Roshchyna disappeared on August 3, 2023 while reporting in Russian-occupied territory and was allegedly captured by Russian military forces.

News Rider reports that Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed her detention in April 2024, nearly eight months after her disappearance.

Prior to her imprisonment, Roshchyna spent more than a year reporting from the front lines of Russia’s war on Ukraine as an independent journalist for outlets including Ukrayinska Pravda, Hromadske and Radio Free Europe.

Reacting, Hoffman described Roshchyna's death as not just the loss of a remarkable woman, but of an intrepid witness to history.

"As details emerge surrounding the circumstances of her death, our thoughts are with Victoria’s family, colleagues, and loved ones during this immensely difficult time.

"Regardless of the cause of her death, we can say with certainty that her life was taken because she dared tell the truth," she added.

Hoffman was optimistic that Roshchyna's death would not be in vain, just as she called on the international community to urgently pressure Russia to cease targeting journalists and silencing press freedom.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines. It is used for personal vehicles, generators, and industrial equipment.
