The 90-year-old President, Market Women Association of Nigeria, Madam Felicia Sani paid a surprise visit to female journalists, just as she lamented the increased cases of gender-based violence across the country.
Sani, a respected advocate for women's rights, shared her wealth of experience during the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists ΔΊ(NAWOJ) FCT Executive Meeting in Abuja recently.
She stated that underage girls are mostly victims of sexual and gender-based violence, pleading with female journalists to use their platforms to challenge harmful gender norms and drive societal change.
Sani urged mothers to instill good morals in their daughters and closely monitor their caregivers.
The women leader highlighted what she described as 'Uncle Syndrome', encouraging journalists to create awareness on the need for victims to speak up despite threats from violators.
She harped on the need to dispel the fear created by statements like 'If you tell someone, you will die.'
While praying for the leadership and members of NAWOJ FCT, she enjoined female journalists to collectively stand against intimidation by violators of gender-based violence.
Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang praised Madam Sani for the visit, assuring her commitment towards the elimination of sexual and gender-based violence.
She noted that since the current executive assumed duty, her team had extended advocacy programmes to rural communities by empowering women to become self-reliant, stand up for their rights, and live healthy lives.
Ikpang promised that NAWOJ is ready to collaborate with other women groups and organisations to advance the welfare of its members and promote the development of women and girls in society.
The interaction underscored the shared commitment of female journalists and women groups in addressing societal challenges and advocating for gender equity in Nigeria.
