Gaza's Food System Collapses As 925, 000 May Die Of Starvation

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
There is an indication that Gaza’s food system has collapsed after a two-month blockade on humanitarian aid.

This is even as the the entire population of Gaza is at critical risk of famine, and 925,000 people may die of starvation.

An International Humanitarian Organisation, Mercy Corps has revealed that the hunger catastrophe affecting more than two million civilians reached horrific new extremes.

To this end, Mercy Corps has pleaded with the global community to donate generously in order to salvage the situation.

"There is no time to waste — donations are urgently needed to ensure we can ramp up distribution of lifesaving aid as soon as the borders re-open. Please rush your gift right now to help meet the extraordinary needs of families in Gaza and 40+ countries around the globe," the statement revealed.

Across Gaza, families are in pure survival mode, just as they are hungry, exhausted, and displaced.

Describing the desperation in Gaza, one Mercy Corps team member said: "People no longer care about bombs, rockets, or even death. What consumes them now is food. How to find it. How to feed their children.

"It is impossible to describe how hard life has become. People walk around in a daze, dizzy from malnutrition and despair, fainting in the street. They look like skin and bones. If you saw them, you would break down and cry."
Despite the aid blockade, Mercy Corps is currently distributing cash assistance to families in Gaza.

"We have had life-saving assistance waiting at the border for months due to the blockade — and as soon as the borders open, our teams and partners will be able to distribute to over 160,000 and to support millions more through humanitarian partners.

"You can support our lifesaving humanitarian response in Gaza and communities in crisis across the globe with an urgent gift right now," the statement added.
