The immediate past President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari is dead.
Buhari died on Sunday, July 13 in a United Kingdom hospital after a protracted illness. He was aged 82 years.
His former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu confirmed the sad news on Sunday afternoon.
Shehu informed that Buhari died on Sunday at a hospital in the United Kingdom.
His statement reads: "The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
“May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
Briefly
Born on 17 December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was the military Head of State from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985.
He was appointed Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund in 1994 during late Sani Abacha's regime, where he supervised major infrastructure development across the country.
Buhari contested for the presidency three times in 2003, 2007, and 2011, and failed woefully. He eventually won in 2015 by defeating then President Goodluck Jonathan.
He served as the President from 2015 to 2023, under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).
Buhari was decorated with several honours including the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, Commander of the Federal Republic, and military medals such as the Defence Service Medal, National Service Medal, and the Forces Service Star.
He also held the Global Seal of Integrity and Congo Medal throughout his service.
As at the time of filling this report, arrangements concerning his funeral are yet to be announced.
