NAWOJ Debut Maiden AI Workshop On Developmental Journalism

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has unveiled maiden edition of online workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) aimed at strengthening developmental journalism. 

Hosted by the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajiya Aisha Bura, the workshop was held over the weekend with the theme: "NewsAssist AI Beyond the Byline: Exploring AI’s Role in Journalism and Investigations."

The workshop was part of the associations' mandate in ensuring that members are trained to attain professional excellence and achieve complimentary access to AI. 

NewsAssist AI is an innovative AI-powered platform founded by Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi to support newsrooms and journalists in enhancing their workflow and reduce stress associated with news production.

The training was led by the Deputy National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr. Lilian Okonkwo Ogabu, and the co-convener, Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi, a renowned investigative journalist and founder of 'The Colonist Report UK and Africa'. 

It highlighted the significance of Artificial Intelligence in journalism for sustained growth. 

Okonkwo-Ogabu commended the participants for leveraging on the involving technology and desiring to acquire knowledge on AI, assuring that the association will subsist on its collaboration with NewsAssist AI to empower female journalists across the country.

With Elfredah's expertise in environment and climate investigations, as well as her innovative approach to AI-powered journalism, she provided invaluable insights to the participants.

According to Elfreeda Kevin, NewsAssist AI app can transcribe about four languages to assist the journalist, and it also helps saves recorded audios.

She urged female journalists to get more familiar with Google, Gemini and other AI apps aside ChatGPT.

Other key takeaways from the workshop include the evolving role of AI tools in investigative reporting, and leveraging NewsAssist AI for safer, more secure, and impactful journalism. 

Others were enhancing investigative journalism with AI, emphasising safety and security; time saving mechanism offered by the app in transcriptions of audio and video files, as well as generating summaries and data protection.

The workshop explicitly underscored the importance of embracing AI in journalism to navigate the complexities of the modern media landscape. 

NAWOJ remains committed to empowering its members with cutting-edge tools and skills to excel in their profession.

EHCON Seals Deal With SEPHON, EPHPAN, WAHEB To Revamp Environmental, Public Health
