Royal Father's have resolved to join forces across the 36 States of the Federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for lasting peace and national development.
This formed the crux of discuss at the launch of 'Traditional Leaders Summit on Mediation, Conflict Management, and Peacebuilding for Sustainable Democracy and Peaceful 2027 General Elections' on Thursday in Abuja.
It was organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Chieftaincy Matters in partnership with the Research Centre for Advocacy and Policy Advisory in Africa (ReCAP).
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Abbas Tijjani Hashim was optimistic that through concrete programmes with clear timelines, measurable outcomes, and comprehensive stakeholder engagement, that peace-building will be attained.
He pointed out that the summit will attract 350 traditional rulers across 36 States and the FCT, adding that royal fathers are embodiment of deep cultural authority.
“Our royal fathers possess what modern institutions often struggle to attain: deep cultural authority that transcends political affiliations and intimate knowledge of local contexts. They possess community dynamics, moral legitimacy that enables honest dialogue between conflicting parties and extensive social networks that reach every household within their jurisdiction,," he added.
Capacity Building
The summit is expected to provide a platform for capacity building within the traditional institutions, a move that may likely empower royal fathers to defend their territories against person's with unquestionable characters.
Hashim sought for the collaboration of Nigerians to strengthen the institutions as effective, accessible and culturally appreciated mechanisms for conflict resolution and democratic governance.
“Together, we will preserve indigenous wisdom while building capacity for contemporary challenges.
“Together, we will ensure that Nigeria’s traditional institutions remain not just relevant but central to our nation’s peace, stability and democratic consolidation,” he said.
Promoting Unity
The peace and unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable in the local communities especially as the 2027 general elections approaches.
Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Dr. Joseph Ochogwu described traditional rulers as the frontline peacebuilders in local communities.
He noted that the summit will provide a platform for traditional rulers to share experiences, foster dialogue, and promote unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"Together, we can build a future where democracy thrives, conflicts are resolved peacefully, and Nigeria moves forward in unity and prosperity," he added.
Legislative Assurance
Aside law making, appropriation, representation and oversight functions, the National Assembly has the capacity to sustain peaceful coexistence by addressing the root causes of conflict and providing a platform for dialogue.
The Chairman, House Committee on Traditional Institutions, Mr. Mohammed Abdulmumin assured that the National Assembly is committed to partnering with relevant institutions to ensure peace during the 2027 elections.
He referred to the 10th Assembly as an inclusive 'Assembly of the common man,' where citizens’ voices are heard and respected.”
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Protocol, Ambassador Issah Niniola promised that the Department of State Services (DSS) is working to ensure that Nigeria remains safe and conflict-free.
He maintained that early warning systems especially at the grassroots will prompt peace and prevent violence.
